Birmingham Development Company

Birmingham Development Company (BDC) does not do ordinary. The team was established in 1998 to create the mixed-use and leisure destination The Mailbox, and with The Cube, the city’s most ambitious new project currently under construction and the purchase of the landmark former Post & Mail site recently signed and sealed, BDC has an impressive track record for delivering iconic developments that put Birmingham on the map.

In July 2007 BDC founded BuildAbility (BAL) to build the £100 million mixed use scheme The Cube and future BDC projects. The company’s tagline is “noticeably different” and from the recruitment process through to actual “build ability” onsite, the office and site based team works closely with its consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers.

BDC’s vision is ‘to create buildings that transform cities, breathe life into their surroundings and inspire people who use them’. Through the current turbulent economic climate BDC continues to build out The Cube to a very tight build programme to enable the vision to be delivered in 2010 as promised.

The Cube

The Cube is the final phase of The Mailbox. The innovative 23-storey building will set a new benchmark for mixed-use schemes internationally and will extend the destination in the heart of the city’s Westside.

The Cube comprises high end shops, café bars, restaurants, a spa with a pool, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ office space, over 244 luxury apartments and a 50-bed boutique hotel. Crowning the building is the city’s first sky bar and rooftop restaurant, already let to D&D London (formerly Conran) offering panoramic views across Birmingham.

Hovering on a glass base, the golden cladding and intricate fretwork give The Cube a unique identity. The internal twisting open atrium lined with coloured glass provides a light-infused courtyard with a glazed flourish on the roof that will light the skyline.

Birmingham’s first new piece of public art in a generation, created and installed by renowned Midlands artist ‘Temper’, will be revealed at the launch of The Cube.
