It all starts with the nomination form - BYPY 2009 Winner Suzie Branch's tips for BYPY success

It’s official you can now enter the Birmingham Young Professional 2010 awards! Following the official launch party on 21st January it’s now time to download the application form and submit it by Monday 1stMarch.

And as BYPY winner 2009 I have been inundated recently with people wanting advice on how to make the most of the application process and in particular filling in the application form. So I thought I’d write about it!

So here are my top six tips for filling in the application form:

1. Read, Read and Read!
It may sound obvious but make sure you fully read the questions and understand what the question is asking.

2. Put it away!
Read through the application, gather an understanding of the information that they are looking for and then put the form away. Don’t fill it in immediately give yourself some time to think over the questions and to think over why you are entering BYPY.

3. Tick Tock
Don’t leave it to the last minute. Don’t try and fill it in the night before – it’s a prestigious and honourable award that you are entering for and therefore thought and time should be given to every stage. A rushed, half hearted form will look just like a rushed half hearted form.

4. Have confidence and stand tall
I find it really difficult to write about myself and my own achievements but you have to have confidence and pride in what you have achieved. Remember your achievements are down to your own hard work, no-one can take them away from you so stand proud and tall.

5. Respect!
Be respectful! Someone is going to use their own (voluntary) time to read through your application form therefore respect this and make sure you don’t insult people by including spelling mistakes etc.

6. Have fun
Don’t get too stressed or worked up. The process and experience should be fun and enjoyable as well as exhilarating and challenging.
